Portugal is one of those rare places where everything feels effortlessly right—sun-warmed cobbled streets, meals that stretch into the afternoon, and landscapes that shift from vineyard-covered valleys to cliff-lined coastlines in the space of a few hours. Over twelve days, this self-drive journey has been designed to bring you deeper into the country’s rhythm, far beyond the usual paths and right into the places where Portugal’s quiet magic lives.

From the vineyards of the Douro to the sun-drenched cliffs of the Algarve, Portugal has a way of drawing you in—always with something unexpected. You might find yourself tasting wine where it’s made, walking through centuries-old university halls in Coimbra, or listening to Fado spill out of a tucked-away tavern in Lisbon. In Porto, it’s the scent of salted cod and the gleam of filigree that stay with you; in Sintra, it’s the misty forests and storybook palaces. Each place has its own feel, its own rhythm—and discovering them by road makes it all the more personal.

We’ve stitched together each moment—from hotels with true character to experiences led by those who live them every day—to give you a Portugal that’s immersive, intimate, and quietly unforgettable. The freedom of the open road, with every detail taken care of. Just as it should be.

Itinerary

Arrival & Porto

Touch down in Porto, where your Grand Tour of Portugal begins with a smooth transfer to Maison Albar’s Monumental Palace, right in the heart of the city. With time on your side, ease into the journey with a relaxed wander or dive straight into Porto’s local flavour—perhaps joining a food tour to sample pão de ló, francesinha, and salted cod, or stepping into a traditional filigree atelier to witness this intricate craft firsthand. However you explore, the city reveals its layers slowly and generously.

Douro Valley

Leave the coast behind and head inland to the Douro Valley, where you’ll settle into the tranquil Torel Quinta da Vacaria estate. Over the next two days, you might take part in a cooking workshop, enjoy a private wine and olive oil tasting, or cruise the river on a traditional rabelo boat among plenty of other local experiences.

Coimbra

Continue south to Coimbra, once the heart of Portugal’s medieval kingdom. Wander through its atmospheric streets, visit the centuries-old university, or simply enjoy a slow afternoon in one of its quiet squares. With its mix of faded grandeur and youthful energy, Coimbra offers a gentle pause in the journey.

Sintra & Cascais

The road south takes you first to Óbidos, to then continue on to Cascais and settle into Fortaleza do Guincho, perched above the Atlantic. Over the next two days, you can opt for a sunset picnic, a catamaran cruise to spot dolphins, or a surf lesson along the coast. This stretch of Portugal is all about fresh air, salt spray, and easygoing adventure.

Lisbon

Lisbon reveals itself in small, vivid moments—the scent of pastry in the morning, the rhythm of Fado after dark. During your stay, you can learn to bake pastéis de nata, explore the city through food or art with a local guide, and end the day with dinner and live music in a quiet tavern. With Valverde Lisboa as your base, this final stop balances discovery with ease.

Algarves

Your final stretch takes you south to the Algarve, where golden cliffs meet the Atlantic and the pace slows to match the rhythm of the waves. With your base at Vila Joya, spend your days exploring by land or sea—perhaps a private boat excursion along the rugged coast or a scenic bike ride with sweeping ocean views.

Departure

On your final day, enjoy a quiet morning in Faro’s old town, where cobbled lanes, peaceful squares, and faded facades offer one last glimpse of Portugal’s charm. Whether it’s a slow coffee by the marina or a short stroll through the village, there’s time to take it in before your departure. The journey ends here—unrushed, grounded, and full of memories.
